Anguilla History
Anguilla has an early history of settlement since AD 600 by the Arawak Indians. The English and their slaves eventually attempted to make the island their home, however, the weather conditions were very unfavorable for their agricultural purposes and they left the island and the slaves behind while they traveled to their next destination.
Anguilla became part of the St-Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Colony. While under this reign, St. Kitts-Nevis "ruled" over Anguilla to the dissatisfaction of the Anguillians as they felt they were not being fairly treated or financially supported by the British rule of St. Kitts-Nevis.
On May 30, 1967 "Anguilla Day", Anguillians marched on the police headquarters and expelled the St. Kitts police force. Anguilla became an official separate British dependent territory on Dec. 19, 1980.
